Daniel 2:31-45
"Thou, O king, sawest, and behold
a great image. This image, which was mighty, and whose brightness was surpassing,
stood before thee; and the appearance thereof was terrible. As for that
image, its head was of fine gold, its breast and its arms of silver, its
belly and its thighs of brass, its legs of iron, its feet part of iron,
and part of clay.
"Thou sawest till that a stone was
cut out without hands, which smote the image upon its feet that were of
iron and clay, and broke them in pieces. Then was the iron, the clay, the
brass, the silver, and the gold, broken in pieces together, and become
like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them
away, so that no place was found for them; and the stone that smote the
image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. This is the
dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king.
"Thou, O king, king of kings, unto
whom the God of heaven hath given the kingdom, the power, and the strength,
and the glory; and wheresoever the children of men, the beasts of the field,
and the fowls of the heaven dwell, hath He given them into thy hand, and
hath made thee to rule over them all; thou art the head of gold.
"And after thee shall arise another
kingdom inferior to thee; and another third kingdom of brass, which shall
rule over all the earth. And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron;
forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and beateth down all things; and as
iron that crusheth all these, shall it break in pieces and crush.
"And whereas thou sawest the feet and
toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, it shall be a divided kingdom;
but there shall be in it of the firmness of the iron, forasmuch as thou
sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. And as the toes of the feet were
part of iron, and part of clay, so part of the kingdom shall be strong,
and part thereof broken. And whereas thou sawest the iron mixed with miry
clay, they shall mingle themselves by the seed of men; but they shall not
cleave on to another, even as iron doth not mingle with clay.
"And in the days of those kings shall
the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed; nor
shall the kingdom be left to another people; it shall break in pieces and
consume all these kingdoms, but it shall stand forever. Forasmuch as thou
sawest that a stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that
it broke in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold;
the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter;
and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof is sure. (Jewish

Revelation 12:3,9
"And there was seen another sign in
heaven; and behold, a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns,
and upon his heads seven diadems.
"And the great dragon was cast down,
the old serpent, he that is called the Devil, and Satan [the Adversary],
the deceiver of the whole world; he was cast down to the earth, and his
angels were cast down with him. (American Standard Version)
Revelation 17
"And one of the seven angels who had
the seven bowls came and spoke with me, saying, 'Come here, I shall show
you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters, with whom
the kings of the earth committed acts of immorality, and those who
dwell on the earth were made drunk with the wine of her immorality.
"And he carried me away in the Spirit
into a wilderness; and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast, full of
blasphemous names, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was
clothed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones
and pearls, having in her hand a gold cup full of abominations and of the
unclean things of her immorality, and upon her forehead a name was
written, a mystery, 'BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE
ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.'
"And I saw the woman drunk with the
blood of the saints, and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus. And
when I saw her, I wondered greatly. And the angel said to me, 'Why do you
wonder? I shall tell you the mystery of the woman and of the beast that
carries her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns.
"The beast that you saw was and is
not, and is about to come up out of the abyss and to go to destruction.
And those who dwell on the earth will wonder, whose name has not been written
in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they see the
beast, that he was and is not and will come.
"Here is the mind which has wisdom.
The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits, and they are
seven kings; five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; and
when he comes, he must remain a little while.
"And the beast which was and is not,
is himself also an eighth, and is one of the seven, and he goes
to destruction. And the ten horns which you saw are ten kings, who have
not yet received a kingdom, but they receive authority as kings with the
beast for one hour. These have one purpose and they give their power and
authority to the beast.
"These will wage war against the Lamb,
and the Lamb will overcome them, because He is Lord of lords and King of
kings, and those who are with Him are the called and chosen and
faithful.
"And he said to me, 'The waters which
you saw where the harlot sits, are peoples and multitudes and nations and
tongues. And the ten horns which you saw, and the beast, these will hate
the harlot and will make her desolate and naked, and will eat her flesh
and will burn her up with fire. For God has put it in their heart to execute
His purpose by having a common purpose, and by giving their kingdom to
the beast, until the words of God should be fulfilled. And the woman whom
you saw is the great city, which reigns over the kings of the earth.' (New

Daniel 7
"In the first year of Belshazzar king
of Babylon Daniel had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed: then
he wrote the dream and told the sum of the matters. Daniel spake and said,
I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of heaven brake
forth upon the great sea. And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse
one from another.
"The first was like a lion, and had
eagle's wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was
lifted up from the earth, and made to stand upon two feet as a man; and
a man's heart was given to it.
"And, behold, another beast, a second,
like to a bear; and it was raised up on one side, and three ribs were in
its mouth between its teeth: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour
much flesh.
"After this I beheld, and, lo, another,
like a leopard, which had upon its back four wings of a bird; the beast
had also four heads; and dominion was given to it.
"After this I saw in the night-visions,
and behold, a fourth beast, terrible and powerful, and strong exceedingly;
and it had great iron teeth; it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped
the residue with its feet: and it was diverse from all the beasts that
were before it: and it had ten horns.
"I considered the horns, and, behold,
there came up among them another horn, a little one, before which three
of the first horns were plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn
were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things.
"I beheld till thrones were placed,
and one that was ancient of days did sit: his raiment was white as snow,
and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, and
the wheels thereof burning fire. A fiery stream issued and came forth from
before him: thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand
stood before him: the judgement was set, and the books were opened. I beheld
at that time because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake;
I beheld even till the beast was slain, and its body destroyed, and it
was given to be burned with fire. And as for the rest of the beasts, their
dominion was taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and
a time.
"I saw in the night-visions, and behold,
there came with the clouds of heaven one like unto a son of man, and he
came even to the ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.
And there was given to him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all
peoples, nations, and languages should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting
dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not
be destroyed.
"As for me, Daniel, my spirit was grieved
in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me. I came
near unto one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth concerning
all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things.
"These great beasts, which are four,
are four kings, that shall arise out of the earth. But the saints of the
Most High shall receive the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever,
even for ever and ever. Then I desired to know the truth concerning the
fourth beast, which was diverse from all of them, exceeding terrible, whose
teeth were of iron, and its nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces,
and stamped the residue with its feet; and concerning the ten horns that
were on its head, and the other horn which came up, and before which
three fell, even that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake great
things, whose look was more stout than its fellows. I beheld, and the same
horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them; until the ancient
of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the Most High, and
the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.
"Thus he said, The fourth beast shall
be a fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all the kingdoms,
and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it
in pieces. And as for the ten horns, out of this kingdom shall ten kings
arise: and another shall arise after them; and he shall be diverse from
the former, and he shall put down three kings. And he shall speak words
against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High;
and he shall think to change the times and the law; and they shall be given
into his hand until a time and times and half a time. But the judgment
shall be set, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to
destroy it unto the end. And the kingdom and the dominion, and the greatness
of the kingdoms under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of
the saints of the Most High: his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and
all dominions shall serve and obey him. Here is the end of the matter.
As for me, Daniel, my thoughts much troubled me, and my countenance was
changed in me: but I kept the matter in my heart. (American Standard Version)
Psalm 83
A Song, a Psalm of Asaph. O God, keep
not Thou silence; hold not Thy peace, and be not still, O God. For, lo,
Thine enemies are in an uproar; and they that hate Thee have lifted up
the head. They hold crafty converse against Thy people, and take counsel
against Thy treasured ones. They have said: 'Come, and let us cut them
off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.'
For they have consulted together with one consent; against Thee do they
make a covenant;
The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites;
Moab, and the Hagrites [Hagrim];
Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek;
Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;
Assyria also is joined with them; They
have been an arm to the children of Lot. Selah
Do Thou unto them as unto Midian; as to
Sisera, as to Jabin at the brook of Kishon [near Meggido]; who were destroyed
at En-dor; they became as dung for the earth. Make their nobles like Oreb
and Zeeb, and like Zebah and Zalmunna all their princes; Who said: 'Let
us take to ourselves in possession the habitations of God.'
O my God, make them like the whirling
dust; as stubble before the wind. As the fire that burneth the forest,
and as the flame that setteth the mountains ablaze; so pursue them with
Thy tempest, and affright them with Thy storm. Fill their faces with shame;
that they may seek Thy name, O LORD.
Let them be ashamed and affrighted
for ever; Yea, let them be abashed and perish; that they may know that
it is Thou alone whose name is the LORD, the Most High over all the earth.

Daniel 11:29 -
12:13
"At the appointed time he [the king
of the North] shall return and go toward the south; but it shall not be
like the former or the latter. For ships from Cyprus shall come against
him; therefore he shall be grieved, and return in rage against the holy
covenant, and do damage. So he shall return and show regard for
those who forsake the holy covenant.
"And forces shall be mustered by him,
and they shall defile the sanctuary fortress; then they shall take away
the daily sacrifices, and place there the abomination of
desolation. Those who do wickedly against the covenant he shall corrupt
with flattery; but the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry
out great exploits. And those of the people who understand shall
instruct many; yet for many days they shall fall by sword and flame,
by captivity and plundering. Now when they fall, they shall be aided with
a little help; but many shall join with them by intrigue. And some
of those of understanding shall fall, to refine them, purge them,
and make them white, until the time of the end; because it
is still for the appointed time.
"Then the king shall do according to
his own will: he shall exalt and magnify himself above every god, shall
speak blasphemies against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the wrath
has been accomplished; for what has been determined shall be done. He shall
regard neither the God of his fathers nor the desire of women, nor regard
any god; for he shall magnify himself above them all. But in their
place he shall honor a god of fortresses; and a god which his fathers did
not know he shall honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and
pleasant things. Thus he shall act against the strongest fortresses with
a foreign god, which he shall acknowledge, and advance its
glory; and he shall cause them to rule over many, and divide the land for
gain.
"At the time of the end the king of
the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against
him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and
he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through.
He shall also enter the Glorious Land, and many countries shall
be overthrown; but these shall escape from his hand: Edom, Moab, and the
prominent people of Ammon. He shall stretch out his hand against the countries,
and the land of Egypt shall not escape. He shall have power over the treasures
of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; also the
Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow at his heels.
"But news from the east and the north
shall trouble [read hasten] him; therefore he shall go our with
great fury to destroy and annihilate many. And he shall plant the tents
of his palace between the seas and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall
come to his end, and no one will help him.
"At that time Michael shall stand up,
the great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people;
And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was
a nation, even to that time. And at that time your people shall
be delivered, every one who is found written in the book. And many of those
who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life,
some to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise shall
shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to
righteousness like the stars forever and ever. But you, Daniel, shut up
the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run
to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.
"Then I, Daniel, looked; and there
stood two others, one on this riverbank and the other on that riverbank.
And one said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the
waters of the river, 'How long shall the fulfillment of these wonders be?'
"Then I heard the man clothed in linen,
who was above the waters of the river, when he held up his right
hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever, that
it
shall be for a time, times, and half a time; and when the power
of the holy people has been completely shattered, all these things
shall be finished.
"Although I heard, I did not understand,
Then I said, 'My lord, what shall be the end of these things?'
"And he said, 'Go your way,
Daniel, for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of
the end. Many shall be purified, made white, and refined, but the wicked
shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand, but the wise
shall understand. And from the time that the daily sacrifice
is taken away, and the abomination of desolation is set up, there shall
be one thousand two hundred and ninety days. Blessed is he who waits,
and comes to the one thousand three hundred and thirty-five days. But you,
go your way till the end; for you shall rest, and will arise to
your inheritance at the end of the days. (New King James Version)
Revelation 13
"And I saw a beast coming up out of
the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns ten diadems,
and upon his heads names of blasphemy. And the beast which I saw was like
unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his
mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his
throne, and great authority.
And I saw one of his heads as
though it had been smitten unto death; and his death-stroke was healed;
and the whole earth wondered after the beast; and they worshipped the dragon,
because he gave his authority unto the beast; and they worshipped the beast,
saying,
'Who is like unto the beast?
and Who is able to war with him?'
"And there was given to him a mouth
speaking great things and blasphemies: and there was given to him authority
to continue forty and two months. And he opened his mouth for blasphemies
against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, even them
that dwell in the heaven. And it was given unto him to make war with the
saints, and to overcome them: and there was given to him authority over
every tribe and people and tongue and nation. And all that dwell on the
earth shall worship him, every one whose name hath not been written
from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb that hath
been slain. If any man hath an ear, let him hear.
If any man is for captivity,
into captivity he goeth:
if any man shall kill with the sword,
with the sword must he be killed.
Here is the patience and the faith
of the saints.
And I saw another beast coming up out
of the earth; and he had two horns like unto a lamb, and he spake as a
dragon. And he exerciseth all the authority of the first beast in his sight.
And he maketh the earth and them that dwell therein to worship the first
beast, whose death-stroke was healed. And he doeth great signs, that he
should even make fire to come down out of heaven upon the earth in the
sight of men. And he deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by reason of
the signs which it was given him to do in the sight of the beast; saying
to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the
beast who hath the stroke of the sword and lived.
And it was given unto him to
give breath to it, even to the image of the beast, that the image
of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as should not worship
the image of the beast should be killed. And he causeth all, the small
and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free and the bond, that
there be given them a mark on their right hand, or upon their forehead;
and that no man should be able to buy or to sell, save he that hath the
mark, even the name of the beast or the number of his name. Here
is wisdom. He that hath understanding, let him count the number of the
beast; for it is the number of a man: and his number is Six hundred and
sixty and six. (American Standard Version)
Ezekiel
38-39 (Selected Passages)
"And the word of the LORD came unto
me, saying: 'Son of man, set thy face toward Gog, of the land of Magog,
the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, and say:
Thus saith the Lord GOD: Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, chief prince
of Meshech and Tubal; and I will turn thee about, and put hooks into thy
jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen,
all of them clothed most gorgeously, a great company with buckler and shield,
all of them handling swords: Persia, Cush, and Put with them, all of them
with shield and helmet; Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah
in the uttermost parts of the north, and all his bands; even many peoples
with thee.
"Be thou prepared, and prepare for
thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be
thou guarded of them. After many days thou shalt be mustered for service,
in the latter years thou shalt come against the land that is brought back
from the sword, that is gathered out of many peoples, against the mountains
of Israel, which have been a continual waste; but it is brought forth out
of the peoples, and they dwell safely all of them. And thou shalt ascend,
thou shalt come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land,
thou, and all thy bands, and many peoples with thee.
"Therefore, son of man, prophesy, and
say unto Gog: Thus saith the Lord GOD: In that day when My people Israel
dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it? And thou shalt come from thy place
out of the uttermost parts of the north, thou, and many peoples with thee,
all of them riding upon horses, a great company and a mighty army; and
thou shalt come up against My people Israel, as a cloud to cover the land;
it shall be in the end of days, and I will bring thee against My land,
that the nations may know Me, when I shall be sanctified through thee,
O Gog, before their eyes.
"And it shall come to pass in that
day, when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord GOD,
that My fury shall rise up in My nostrils. For in My jealousy and in the
fire of My wrath have I spoken: Surely in that day there shall be a great
shaking in the land of Israel;
"And I will call for a sword against
him throughout all My mountains, saith the Lord GOD; every man's sword
shall be against his brother. And I will plead against him with pestilence
and blood; and I will cause to rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon
the many peoples that are with him, an overflowing shower, and great hailstones,
fire, and brimstone. Thus will I magnify Myself, and sanctify Myself, and
I will make Myself known in the eyes of many nations; and they shall know
that I am the LORD.
"And thou, son of man, prophesy against
Gog, and say: Thus saith the Lord GOD: Behold, I am against thee, O Gog,
chief prince of Meshech and Tubal; and I will turn thee about and lead
thee on, and will cause thee to come up from the uttermost parts of the
north; and I will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel; and I will smite
thy bow out of they left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out
of thy right hand. Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou,
and all thy bands, and the peoples that are with thee; I will give thee
unto the ravenous birds of every sort and to the beasts of the field, to
be devoured. Thou shalt fall upon the open field; for I have spoken it,
saith the Lord GOD.
"And My holy name will I make known
in the midst of My people Israel; neither will I suffer My holy name to
be profaned any more; and the nations shall know that I am the LORD, the
Holy One in Israel. Behold, it cometh, and it shall be done, saith the
Lord GOD; this is the day whereof I have spoken.
"And I will set My glory among the
nations, and all the nations shall see My judgment that I have executed,
and My hand that I have laid upon them. So the house of Israel shall know
that I am the LORD their God, from that day and forward. And the nations
shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity,
because they broke faith with Me, and I hid My face from them; so I gave
them into the hand of their adversaries, and they fell all of them by the
sword. According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions
did I unto them; and I hid My face from them.
"Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD:
Now will I bring back the captivity of Jacob, and have compassion upon
the whole house of Israel; and I will be jealous for My holy name. And
they shall bear their shame, and all their breach of faith which they have
committed against Me, when they shall dwell safely in their land, and none
shall make them afraid; when I have brought them back from the peoples,
and gathered them out of their enemies' lands, and am sanctified in them
in the sight of many nations. And they shall know that I am the LORD their
God, in that I caused them to go into captivity among the nations, and
have gathered them unto their own land; and I will leave none of them any
more there; neither will I hide My face any more from them; for I have
poured out My spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD. (Jewish
Publication Society)
Zechariah 14
"Behold, the day of the LORD is coming,
and your spoil will be divided in your midst. For I will gather all the
nations to battle against Jerusalem; the city shall be taken, the houses
rifled, and the women ravished. Half the city shall go into captivity,
but the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
"Then the LORD will go forth and fight
against those nations, as He fights in the day of battle. And in that day
His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the
east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, from east to west, making
a very large valley; Half the mountain shall move toward the north and
half of it toward the south. Then you shall flee through My mountain
valley, for the mountain valley shall reach to Azal. Yes, you shall flee
as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Thus
the LORD my God will come, and all the saints with You.
"It shall come to pass in that day that
there will be no light; The lights will diminish. It shall be one day which
is known to the LORD-Neither day nor night. But at evening time it shall
happen that it will be light. And in that day it shall be that
living waters shall flow from Jerusalem, half of them toward the eastern
sea and half of them toward the western sea; in both summer and winter
it shall occur.
"And the LORD shall be King over all
the earth. In that day it shall be-- 'The LORD is one,' and His
name one. And the land shall be turned into a plain from Geba to Rimmon
south of Jerusalem. Jerusalem shall be raised up and inhabited in her place
from Benjamin's Gate to the place of the First Gate and the Corner Gate,
and from the Tower of Hananeel to the king's winepresses. The
people shall dwell in it; and no longer shall there be utter destruction,
but Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited.
"And this shall be the plague with
which the LORD will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem;
their flesh shall dissolve while they stand on their feet, their eyes shall
dissolve in their sockets, and their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths.
It shall come to pass in that day that a great panic from the LORD
will be among them. Everyone will seize the hand of his neighbor, and raise
his hand against his neighbor's hand; Judah will also fight at Jerusalem.
And the wealth of all the surrounding nations shall be gathered together;
gold, silver, and apparel in great abundance. Such also shall be the plague
on the horse and the mule, on the camel and the donkey, and on all
the cattle that will be in those camps. So shall this plague be.
"And it shall come to pass that
everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall
go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to
keep the Feast of Tabernacles. And it shall be that whichever of
the families of the earth do not come up to Jerusalem to worship the King,
the LORD of hosts, on them there will be no rain. If the family of Egypt
will not come up and enter in, they shall have no rain; they
shall receive the plague with which the LORD strikes the nations who do
not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. This shall be the punishment
of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not come up to keep
the Feast of Tabernacles. In that day 'HOLINESS TO THE LORD' shall be engraved
on the bells of the horses. The pots in the LORD's house shall be like
the bowls before the altar. Yes, every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall
be holiness to the LORD of hosts. Everyone who sacrifices shall come and
take them and cook in them. In that day there shall no longer be a Canaanite
in the house of the LORD of hosts. (New King James Version)
Matthew 23:37-39
"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills
the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to
gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her
wings, and you were unwilling. Behold, your house is left to you desolate!
For I say to you, from now on you shall not see Me until you say, 'Blessed
is He who comes in the name of the LORD!" (New American Standard Bible).
Daniel 9:23-27
"Seventy weeks have been decreed for
your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an
end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness,
to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy place.
So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree
to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will
be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza
and moat, even in times of distress.
"Then after sixty-two weeks the Messiah
will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to
come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come
with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined.
"And he will make a firm covenant with
the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop
to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will
come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one
that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate. (New American
Standard Version)
Ezekiel
16 (Selected Passages)
"The word of the LORD came to me: 'Son
of man, confront Jerusalem with her detestable practices,...
"...And when I looked at you and saw
that you were old enough for love, I spread my garment over you and covered
your nakedness. I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant with
you, declares the Sovereign LORD, and you became mine.
"I bathed you with water and washed
the blood from you and put ointments on you. I clothed you with an embroidered
dress and put leather sandals on you. I dressed you in fine linen and covered
you with costly garments. I adorned you with jewelry: I put bracelets on
your arms and a necklace around your neck, and I put a ring on your nose,
earrings on your ears and a beautiful crown on your head. So you were adorned
with gold and silver; your clothes were of fine linen and costly fabric
and embroidered cloth. Your food was fine flour, honey and olive oil. You
became very beautiful and rose to be a queen. And your fame spread among
the nations on account of your beauty, because the splendor I had given
you made your beauty perfect, declares the Sovereign LORD.
"But you trusted in your beauty and
used your fame to become a prostitute. You lavished your favors on anyone
who passed by and your beauty became his. You took some of your garments
to make gaudy high places, where you carried on your prostitution. Such
things should not happen, nor should they ever occur. You also took the
fine jewelry I gave you, the jewelry made of my gold and silver, and you
made for yourself male idols and engaged in prostitution with them. And
you took your embroidered clothes to put on them, and you offered my oil
and incense before them. Also the food I provided for you--the fine flour,
olive oil and honey I gave you to eat--you offered as fragrant incense
before them. That is what happened, declares the Sovereign LORD.
"And you took your sons and daughters
whom you bore to me and sacrificed them as food to idols. Was your prostitution
not enough? You slaughtered my children and sacrificed them to the idols.
In all your detestable practices and your prostitution you did not remember
the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, kicking about in
your blood. Woe! Woe to you, declares the Sovereign LORD.
"You engaged in prostitution with the
Egyptians, your lustful neighbors, and provoked me to anger with your increasing
promiscuity. So I stretched out my hand against you and reduced your territory;
I gave you over to the greed of your enemies, the daughters of the Philistines,
who were shocked by your lewd conduct. You engaged in prostitution with
the Assyrians too, because you were insatiable; and even after that, you
still were not satisfied. Then you increased your promiscuity to include
Babylonia, a land of merchants, but even with this you were not satisfied.
"How weak-willed you are, declares
the Sovereign LORD, when you do all these things, acting like a brazen
prostitute!
"You adulterous wife! You prefer strangers
to your own husband!
"Therefore, you prostitute, hear the
word of the LORD! This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Because you poured
out your wealth and exposed your nakedness in your promiscuity with your
lovers, and because of all your detestable idols, and because you gave
them your children's blood, therefore I am going to gather all your lovers,
with whom you found pleasure, those you loved as well as those you hated.
I will gather them against you from all around and will strip you in front
of them, and they will see all your nakedness. I will sentence you to the
punishment of women who commit adultery and who shed blood; I will bring
upon you the blood vengeance of my wrath and jealous anger. Then I will
hand you over to your lovers, and they will tear down your mounds and destroy
your lofty shrines. They will strip you of your clothes and take your fine
jewelry and leave you naked and bare. They will bring a mob against you,
who will stone you and hack you to pieces with their swords. They will
burn down your houses and inflict punishment on you in the sight of many
women. I will put a stop to your prostitution, and you will no longer pay
your lovers. Then my wrath against you will subside and my jealous anger
will turn away from you; I will be calm and no longer angry.
"Your older sister was Samaria, who
lived to the north of you with her daughters; and your younger sister,
who lived to the south of you with her daughters, was Sodom. You not only
walked in their ways and copied their detestable practices, but in all
your ways you soon became more depraved than they. As surely as I live,
declares the Sovereign LORD, your sister Sodom and her daughters never
did what you and your daughters have done.
"This is what the Sovereign LORD says:
I will deal with you as you deserve, because you have despised my oath
by breaking the covenant. Yet I will remember the covenant I made with
you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant
with you. Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed when you receive
your sisters, both those who are older than you and those who are younger.
I will give them to you as daughters, but not on the basis of my covenant
with you. So I will establish my covenant with you, and you will know that
I am the LORD. Then, when I make atonement for you for all you have done,
you will remember and be ashamed and never again open your mouth because
of your humiliation, declares the Sovereign LORD. (New International Version)
Isaiah 4:2-6
"In that day the Branch of the LORD
shall be beautiful and glorious; And the fruit of the earth shall be
excellent and appealing for those of Israel who have escaped.
"And it shall come to pass that he
who is left in Zion and he who remains in Jerusalem will be
called holy--everyone who is recorded among the living in Jerusalem. When
the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and purged
the blood of Jerusalem from her midst, by the spirit of judgment and by
the spirit of burning, then the LORD will create above every dwelling place
of Mount Zion, and above her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day and the
shining of a flaming fire by night. For over all the glory will be a covering. And there will be a tabernacle for shade in the daytime from
the heat, for a place of refuge, and for a shelter from storm and rain." (New King James Version)
Jeremiah 23:1-6
Woe unto the shepherds that destroy
and scatter the sheep of My pasture! saith the LORD. Therefore thus saith
the LORD, the God of Israel, against the shepherds the feed My people;
Ye have scattered My flock, and driven them away, and have not taken care
of them; behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the
LORD. And I will gather the remnant of My flock out of all the countries
whither I have driven them, and will bring them back to their folds; and
they shall be fruitful and multiply. And I will set up shepherds over them,
who shall feed them; and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed neither
shall any be lacking, saith the LORD.
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD,
that I will raise unto David a righteous shoot, and he shall reigh as king
and prosper, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In
his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely; and this
is his name whereby he shall be called, the LORD is our righteousness.

Isaiah 53
Who would have believed our report?
And to whom hath the arm of the LORD been revealed? For he shot up right
forth as a sapling, and as a root out of a dry ground; He had no form nor
comeliness, that we should look upon him, nor beauty that we should delight
in him. He was despised, and forsaken of men, a man of pains, and acquainted
with disease, and as one from whom men hide their face; He was despised
and we esteemed him not.
Surely our diseases he did bear, and
our pains he carried; Whereas we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God,
and afflicted. But he was wounded because of our transgressions, he was
crushed because of our iniquities: The chastisement of our welfare was
upon him, and with his stripes we were healed. All we like sheep did go
astray, we turned every one to his own way; And the LORD hath made to light
on him the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed, though he humbled
himself and opened not his mouth; As a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and as a sheep that before her shearers is dumb; Yea, he opened not his
mouth. By oppression and judgment he was taken away, and with his generation
who did reason? For he was cut off out of the land of the living, for the
transgression of my people to whom the stroke was due. And they made his
grave with the wicked, and with the rich his tomb; Although he had done
no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
Yet it pleased to LORD to crush him
by disease; To see if his soul would offer itself in restitution, that
he might see his seed, prolong his days, and that the purpose of the LORD
might prosper by his hand: Of the travail of his soul he shall see to the
full, even My servant, who by his knowledge did justify the Righteous One
to the many, and their iniquities he did bear. Therefore will I divide
him a portion among the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the mighty;
Because he bared his soul unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors;
Yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Jeremiah 31:30-33
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD,
that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the
house of Judah; not according to the covenant that I made with their fahers
in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of
Egypt; forasmuch as they broke My covenant, although I was a lord over
them saith the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the
house of Israel after those days, saith the LORD, I will put My law in
their inward parts, and in their heart will I write it; and I will be their
God, and they shall be My people; and they shall teach no more every man
his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying; 'Know the LORD'; for
they shall all know Me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them,
saith the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin will I
remember no more. (Jewish Publication Society)
